It's not a good day to be Vonage

The troubles continue for Vonage. The service has already had its share of angry customers, but the 'disastrous' IPO has made things worse, and there's no obvious end in sight.

From the New York Times:

Vonage, which has racked up hundreds of millions of dollars in losses in part because of its aggressive marketing campaign, does not want to spend more to retain angry customers, analysts said.

"Clearly they've gotten a significant amount of bad press, and for a company spending a lot of marketing to get customers, they will have to spend even more to keep customers from defecting," said Richard Greenfield, an analyst at Pali Research. "It appears that management feels that the directed stock program could backfire and result in higher churn," or customer turnover, he added.

Is Vonage Developing Wi-Fi Calling Solutions For Sony And Nintendo?

T3 has reported that a source close to Vonage has confirmed that the company is developing Wi-Fi calling solutions for Sony PSP and Nintendo DS. It was already known that both the systems were capable of implementing VoIP but for the first time we are getting clear indications that a major VoIP player is making a move in this direction.

Even if we consider it to be a rumor the details offered are quite less as regards how Vonage is planning to implement VoIP in the disparate devices. The possibilities which can be considered include a firmware update for the PSP or DSpeak like software or an Opera like cartridge for the DS.

The company has refused to comment on the matter so keep on guessing till some formal announcements are made.

Details regarding what the law would be like can be found on website of  fcc. It is still unclear as to what rules would make of VoIP outfits that encrypt their communications.

"Skypecasts": 100-person Internet conferencing

Skype continues to innovate with its service. I think it is doing so to penetrate the business segment. Sounding much like "Podcast", Skype has now launched "Skypecasts", which provide free audio conferences for up to 100 participants.

The current conferencing feature in Skype only supports up to 10 people, all of whom can speak at the same time. However, in the new "Skypecast", a host moderates and controls when someone can speak.

The "Skypecast" service begins on May 3 in an "early preview" form.  Users can find Skypecasts on the Skype Web site. In addition, all the conferences will be listed on the website publicly.

Although, Skype says that using Skypecasts, people can discuss shared interests and hobbies, I am positive that business users will take up "Skypecast" enthusiastically.

VOIP wars: an update

Sometime, we reported on a suit filed against Skype by a technology company for, of all things, racketeering charges. In 'peaceful' Sweden, a bitter war is brewing between telecoms group TeliaSonera and its rival Tele2.

The two companies have been fighting since 2000. The case is now in the courts and is about how much the two rivals should pay for routing each others' customers' calls through their networks.

Now, TeliaSonera says that the latest court ruling means that Tele2 must pay it $136 million (1 billion Swedish crowns), but Tele2 said more rulings had to be made and that instead, TeliaSonera would be paying it sums.

US VOIP suppliers face obscure export regulations

Did you know that the section 740 of the export control regulations contains a definition that restricts companies from selling products in other countries that can support "concurrent encrypted data tunnels or channels exceeding 250" connections at one time?

That's peanuts compared to the the capabilities of modern networking products that routinely handle thousands of simultaneous "channels" or users.  The obscure piece of legislation can hinder say, Cisco's export of advanced networking products.

However, companies can easily sidestep the legislation and easily develop the products overseas

VOIP security is in

VOIP security is one the main, if not the main topics at the ongoing Interop in Las Vegas. Since it is already clear that VoIP over WiFi will be big thing, many vendors are promoting their software solutions for a secure VoIP over WiFi.

This time around, the fear indeed is real and not a mere marketer's gimmick. For example, Trapeze is going to introduce two new security features that come with the upgraded version of its Mobility System Software.

Expect more vendors to address VoIP security in the days to come.

Using Secure SIP to protect VoIP

What is secure SIP? Secure SIP is a security mechanism used to send SIP messages over a Transport Layer Security-encrypted channel. Secure SIP was earlier just used to secure HTTP sessions, However, with rising concerns about the security aspects of VoIP, TLS (Transport Layer Security) can be modified to protect SIP session communications from eavesdroppers and hackers.

Message Digest (MD5) authentication is the the most basic level of VoIP security. All SIP user agents and SIP proxy servers must implement MD5. Doing this, Network Administrators can throw an authentication challenge between a SIP proxy server and SIP user agent.

Cisco and others get serious about Voice Over Wireless LANs

Nearly Free VoIP?

One suspects that the VoIP market is already bursting at the seams with ths deluge of terminology and business models. Free VoIP, paid VoIP, ad-supported VoIP, and so on. Now I hear about 'nearly free VoIP'. In the United States, AT&T and Yahoo have jointly launched a co-branded version of Yahoo! Messenger with Voice to AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet subscribers and all Yahoo! users in AT&T's 13-state local service area.

At first when I read this article, I was confused. By 'nearly free VoIP', the article was merely alluding to the low sot structure of the combines' VoIP offerings.
