QoS - Backpage Briefing - Quality Of Service standards improved for VoIP - Brief Article
QoS: Even though modern VoIP quality is stellar compared to the late 90s, its reliability still isn't as guaranteed as circuit-switched voice. There's also no standard way to rate QoS for VoIP.
The Latter is set to change this month at an International Telecommunication Union bake-off to select a test standard for measuring voice quality on VoIP networks. The two contestants are Psytechnics and Telchemy, whose software has been in trials with European carriers France Telecom and Ectel for the past year and a haft. The new standard--to be known as P.VTQ--is intended to estimate speech quality based on protocol parameters mainly taken from IP packet headers, according to Light Reading. Telecom equipment vendors currently use PESQ (perception evaluation of speech quality), which compares the signal of an IP call at both ends of the network, but not in a live network.
