China Telecom markets regular phone services as VoIP
China Telecom's bid to dominate the nations growing IP telephony market is causing it to market regular fixed-line phone services as VoIP, according to a report in Beijing-based China Youth Daily.
VoIP already accounts for some 20% of Chinese long-distance calls, with the various alternative telecoms gaining large market shares. VoIP is the fastest-growing and most competitive segment of the fixed- line market in China, and has seen prices more than halve since deregulation at the beginning of the year.
China Telecom's 60% of the market is meager compared to its complete dominance over regular fixed-line telephony. The Company's "pseudo" IP service is widely available and offers better sound quality than that of its competitors, helping the Company increase its market share.
